The latest Catalogue raisonne of the paintings and miniatures of
Hans Holbein and his brother Ambrosius (Text german)
D.M. Klinger and Antje Höttler
Hans Holbein the younger and his brother Ambrosius

After approximately 20 years of research, the work of Ambrosius Holbein is also being chronologically organized and recorded for the first time in addition to that of his brother Hans.

In 1515 the two brother artists joined the  Studio of Hans Herbst in Basel where they learned the manual skills which painting requires.   While   the   older  brother Ambrosius dropped out of sight in 1519, Hans Holbein began his career as a court artist in the Service of King Henry VIII of England, He died at the end of 1543. As celebrated as he is today, he still remained  totally unknown in his birthplace even as late as the 19th Century.

The fact that most experts are talking about a new evaluation of „their" research findings prompted the authors to draw up a  list  of  Statements  of  the  individual authors of the last 100 years including the latest authorities, and compare them. This produces psychological suspense in addition to the art history aspects.
